How does a payment plan work?

Making payments towards your balance

A payment plan is a way of splitting up the balance you owe into smaller regular payments.

For example...

💯 You start with a balance of £100.

🍕 You would like to make payments of £10 each month.

🗓 This means your balance will be completely paid off in 10 months.

🎢 The higher the payment, the quicker you pay off the debt. So a payment of £20 would pay the balance in 5 months instead.

There is a suggested plan (or plans) ready to set up in your Ophelos account. We have designed these to help you pay back your debt in a reasonable amount of time.

You don’t have to set up one of these plans if you can't afford it. It is possible to pay what you can instead, however, your repayment time might be unreasonably long if you set up a small payment. If this is the case we may limit the time you can pay into this plan and advise you to seek further support.

Making payments towards your energy arrears

You will need to make one payment only per month for your energy account. This means combining your ongoing energy bills with your debt repayments.

For example...

🗓️ You have energy arrears of £100 and want to pay off your balance in 10 months.

💡 Your ongoing energy bills are £80 a month.

💸 This means you’ll set up a plan of £90.

⚖️ That’s £80 to stay on top of your regular usage, and £10 towards the debt.

🧮 The £90 you pay Ophelos will go directly to your energy account every month, with no extra fees or charges. You don’t need to make any payments to your energy company while you are paying your Ophelos plan.

⚠️ If you’re struggling to afford your usage you can pay what you can instead, but you will finish your plan with more debt than you have now.

This sort of plan is a temporary solution, so it’s important that you also take action to deal with your arrears if you decide to set it up.

As a first point of call we would urge you to seek debt advice.

We also have a lot of resources in our help centre if you’re worried about your energy bills.
